The First Republic of the Philippines was formally established on January 23, 1899, in Malolos, Bulacan. The Malolos Constitution was officially promulgated and the First Philippine Republic was proclaimed and inaugurated at the Barasoain Church in Malolos. On the same day, Emilio Aguinaldo took his oath of office as President.[1] The Philippine Revolution, which started with the Katipunan and resulted in the First Constitution and Republican Government of Asia, came to an end with the Malolos Republic.


The First Republic was marked by the establishment of constitutional democracy, with the ratification of the Malolos Constitution in 1899. This constitution provided for the separation of powers among the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government, as well as the protection of civil liberties and individual rights


However, despite the establishment of the First Republic, the Philippines faced numerous challenges, including political instability, economic difficulties, and territorial disputes with neighboring countries. In addition, the country was soon occupied by the United States as part of the American colonial period, which lasted from 1898 to 1946. The founding of the first republic was a crucial turning point in the history of the nation and a major step toward the development of a democratic system of government. We can better appreciate the sacrifices that their ancestors made to ensure the country's freedom and obtain a better grasp of what it means to be a Filipino by studying and honoring the first republic.
